STREET EDUCATION
The street child education project was started for the purpose of giving a nutritious and stable learning environment to children who live on the street or in slum areas under circumstances which have prevented them from going to school. Many of these children live too far from a school and from Manav Sadhna to be able to attend classes and other programs. They are busy helping to earn a living for their families by shoe polishing, working at tea stalls, and selling water pouches and license covers. So, Currently Manav Sadhna has started 5 street schools in such areas so that children between the ages of 8 and 14 can attend classes regularly in a stable and loving environment while also receiving a value-based education. There are 130 children attending the street school.
The Street School curriculum is specially designed to provide remedial education to children who are not accustomed to the formal education system. The subjects taught include basic Gujarati, Math, English, general knowledge, arts and crafts, and personal hygiene. The teachers also play a variety of games with the children to engage them in learning activities in an interactive manner. The Street School teachers attend training sessions in which they design the curriculum and learn how to utilize teaching materials in a creative way. They also conduct field visits with the parents of the students to monitor their students’ home environments and to help solve any problems that may be affecting the child’s personal or academic development.
GOALS
Impart a value based basic education to the children.
Provide a stable and disciplined environment for the children to learn in.
Supply the children with nutrition and teach them good health and hygiene practices.
Give remedial education in reading and writing to children who have not been a regular part of the formal education system and to bring them to a level at which they may be enrolled in formal schools.
