MEDICAL AWARENESS
The high prevalence of disease in slum communities is often the cause of a lack of awareness, superstition, and social stigma associated with certain diseases. Many are not aware of simple hygienic practices they can perform to prevent certain illnesses, and others are unaware of the avenues they can pursue to receive treatment. To address these issues, Manav Sadhna not only links education, awareness, and empowerment with all of its projects, but also reaches out to thousands of families through need-based medical projects.
GOALS
Increase awareness and treatment of tuberculosis (TB) and malaria, which are two of the most dangerous and prevalent diseases in the Tekro.

Show individuals within the communities how health and hygiene are linked with their livelihoods.
TB Awareness Project
Following widespread surveys and follow-ups with individuals who demonstrate TB symptoms, Manav Sadhna staff work extensively in the field to educated families in affected areas on methods of containing the disease, quick recovery, and combating social stigmas associated with TB. Those presenting symptoms are connected with Manav Sadhna’s DOTs (Direct Observation Treatment) Center, started five years ago on the Tekro by the local government. Counseling, follow-ups, and connections with doctors are made through the DOTs Center.

Malaria Awareness Project
Every year during the Monsoon season, Manav Sadhna goes door-to-door in the most crowded Tekro vicinities to distribute chlorine pills and raise awareness about malaria prevention and treatment.

HIV Awareness camps
Doctors spoke with 65 women and men from slum areas about the causes, symptoms, and consequences of AIDS and educated the group on how to prevent the transmission of HIV. The doctors thoroughly answered the plethora of questions the community members had, distributed sex education information, and offered their services free of cost to the group.

Medical camps
Medical camps are one of the integral ways in which Manav Sadhna is able to connect sick people who cannot afford healthcare with health services. Our health workers follow-up with each patient found through the medical camps, through home field visits until his or her case is completed. In 2009, Manav Sadhna held 5 medical camps, during which 2150 people were examined and/vaccined for carious diseases, infections, and other health problems.

Eye camps

Throughout the year, twelve staff members from the Nagri Eye hospital run an eye camp, to examine patients at the Tekro Community center. The Patients are split up into groups and given a reference according to the type of issue they have with their eyes. Groups include patients found with glaucoma, diabetes and cataracts.

Pediatric camp
Children ages twelve and under from all of the Manav Sadhna’s education projects are given free medical assistance when required. Through medical camps and various awareness and check-up sessions within specific projects, the children’s health is checked at least once a year to ensure they are healthy. Private Doctors are invited to run these camps and sessions and where provide advice and medical assessments. Manav Sadhna then work with these Doctors to ensure treatments are followed through when the children return home.

Malnutrition Assessment

Anganwadi teachers bring those children who they have observed as very sickly or undernourished to the Tekro community center along with their parents. The children”s medical hostopry and background information is catalogued, and a malnutrition grade is assigned to each child. The grades are set by the government guidelines introduced several years ago. Two lab technicians from Sanjeevani Hospital perform blood, TB and urine tests. The children are then taken to the Doctor in groups according to their level of illness so tey can be treated with the appropriate attention.
