SAVING PROGRAM |
 |
The Savings Program was started six years ago with the intent to help women in supporting their households and providing them with a venue to speak about the issues they face in raising their families and in the community. To be part of the program, women from the Tekro sign up to be members of one of two groups—the group of women that saves 5 rupees. per day, and the group of women that saves 10 rupees per day. They then save that amount every day of the year, excluding Sundays and holidays. As an extra incentive to save money, the women are given 10% of their savings added on to the amount they have saved at the end of the saving period. To encourage them not to spend their saved money all on one occasion or being forced to give it for some other cause, like feeding a husband’s alcohol addiction, the women are given their savings back at the end of either 1 or 2 years through items other than cash.
Each savings group meets once a month with a Manav Sadhna staff member. During these monthly meetings, various issues the women face are discussed. Guest speakers often come to discuss the value of saving money and other issues such as illiteracy and family planning. It is through these meetings that women can be connected with organizations and programs that can help the women achieve their goals and maintain their well-beings. |
