Geeta is a gifted 18 year old community member who has, with the support of a long term sponsor, been able to achieve her dream of attending one of the best science colleges in Ahmedabad to study for her B.Sc with Math. As the daughter of a delivery rickshaw driver, living in the slum with her four siblings, this would have been impossible for her without this help despite her excellent exam results.
Eligible children are those enrolled long term in one of our Manav Sadhna after school programs who have not only demonstrated the potential to succeed, but also the values and behavior such as honesty and cleanliness which are an important element of our education and activity programmes. Sponsorship of such children is through both financial support to assist with school fees, tuition fees, school uniforms, stationery, and transport, and also through mentorship and direct involvement with them.
Support is sought for children with both academic and creative arts potential as we expand this initiative. This year, four boys and three girls, including Geeta, have received assistance, and a commitment from their sponsors to continue the relationship throughout their further education and study, and into the future.
This program although it is small at the moment, has a large vision, to create a long term relationship and a sustainable future for these kids.
Education in Gujarat is free until the 7th standard, after which, fees have to be paid. Many students do not have the money to pay these fees to continue to the 12th standard. Often, students quit school because of the embarrassment they face when continuously asked to pay these fees. Once they quit school, the students rarely return to finish their education.
At the beginning of each school year, Manav Sadhna provides educational materials either free of charge or at subsidized cost to the neighbouring communities. Since most of the students in nearby schools come from the Tekra, they have very few resources to purchase school supplies. Manav Sadhna receives donations from wealthier schools in the form of notebooks, schoolbooks, study guides, crayons backpacks and other supplies. These are then circulated to students attending schools in lower socio-economic areas. Manav Sadhna also runs the students adoption program where you can support students providing them educational materila and school fees.
